You’re bound to feel a little bit nervous on the test day. To help things go as smoothly as possible for you, we’ve put together some information to help you understand what will happen on the day of your test.
Where should I go for my test?
Check your test location ahead of your test day. Read the confirmation email we sent you, or contact us if unsure. Please remember that your IELTS test may be in a different location to the office where you booked it.
When should I arrive?
The written Listening, Reading and Writing test starts at 09.00, however we recommend you arrive by 08.00 to give you enough time to get settled.
Unfortunately, if you arrive after 08.30 you will not be allowed to take the test on that day.
You will receive details of your Speaking test time by email at least three days before your test. Please arrive at least 30 minutes before your Speaking test time. If you arrive less than 15 minutes before your Speaking test time, you will not be allowed to take the test.
Please note that if you do not arrive at the times specified above for your IELTS tests, you will not be eligible for a transfer or refund.
What identification documents do I need to bring with me?
You need to bring along the same original ID listed as identification on your application form. Photocopies of IDs are not accepted as identification. Driving licences, Family ID and student IDs are not accepted as identification.
Unfortunately, candidates without valid ID will not be allowed to sit the test and their test fees will not be refunded.
Why do you take my photograph and finger scan?
Security at IELTS tests is important to us. As an added measure, our exams services staff take a passport-style photograph of candidates on the test day. The photograph appears on your results (also known as your Test Report Form). This procedure is mandatory.
What am I permitted to take into the test room?
In the test room you are allowed to have:
- Your valid identification document
- A pencil and a pen (a pencil will be needed for Listening and Reading)
- An eraser
- A bottle of water provided by us
You will not be able to take anything else into the test room.
What do I do with my other belongings, such as my bag, mobile and coat?
There will be a designated area where you will need to leave all your belongings. The British Council is not responsible for loss or damage to your personal belongings at the test venue. Therefore, we strongly recommend leaving valuables, such as mobile phones and computers, at home.
